‘It’s there to correct mistakes’ – Newcastle star whines about VAR after losing to Manchester United

Anthony Gordon has slammed VAR after overlooking Newcastle’s penalty appeal at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Manchester United got back to winning ways with a 3-2 win over the Magpies. Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund got on the scoresheet for the Reds.

Sofyan Amrabat caught Newcastle winger Gordon on the back of his ankle, ripping his sock, inside the penalty area.

No penalty was rewarded.

Controversy has followed VAR since its introduction and it was announced today that Premier League cubs will vote over whether it should be scrapped next season.

Gordon overlooked the referee’s responsibility by insisting he doesn’t know the point of VAR.

“Really sore,” Gordon told Sky Sports in his post-match interview when asked how he was after the challenge from Amrabat. “I’m not too sure how my ankle will be but I’ve watched the incident back it’s a clear penalty, I don’t mind the referee getting it wrong on the pitch because things happen really quickly.

“But I don’t understand what the point of VAR is then because it’s there to correct mistakes.

“He goes down my Achilles and pushes me in the back. And then Casemiro comes and gets the ball but it’s two fouls before that. I just honestly don’t see the point in it.”

Gordon was a constant threat on the wing for Newcastle and Amrabat needed to do something to keep him quiet… until full-time when he started whining again.
